Relaunching My Science Blog: Welcome to Explaining Science

Originally posted in 2019 -Revised and updated August 2026

When I started theScience Geek blog back in 2014, I never expected it still to be up and running five years later.  Over those five years its popularity increased to around 4000 followers. However, I felt it was time for a change.

What were the changes to The Science Geek blog?

In 2019, I decided to relaunch my blog, gave it a new name, a new logo and moved it across to a new domain. The Science Geek became ‘Explaining Science’ and moved to www.explainingscience.org

In Explaining Science, all posts were written under my real name rather than the pseudonym ‘The Science Geek’.

What type of content is in the Explaining Science blog?

The content of Explaining Science is aimed at the same audience as the Science Geek was. It primarily consists of articles on astronomy, space and space travel – written at a level which is easily accessible to the non-scientist but without being dumbed down. This is often a difficult balance to achieve, but I hope I manage it most of the time.

When was the Explaining Science YouTube Channel Launched

In 2020 I created the Explaining Science YouTube channel. I have organised it into playlists and the Popular Astronomy one will be of particular interest to those of you without a scientific background. If you would like to view something a little more challenging try General Astronomy or Physics .

So visit the channel, take a look at some of the videos, and let me know what you think!

All videos on my channel have a Creative Commons license which allows anybody to share, remix, and build upon any of my content for FREE.

What about The Science Geek?

I will continue to own the domain www.thesciencegeek.org. This has been set up to automatically map to the new domain www.explainingscience.org. So, anyone entering a URL of an old Science Geek post will be automatically redirected to Explaining Science.

And Finally…..

Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to all my readers and and hope that you continue to enjoy Explaining Science.

Steve

  1. Good luck Steve – it’s a great blog and no doubt, the new, re-launched version will be ace too! Excellent explanations of science and astronomy; I hope schools are taking note….

  2. I think ye be fantastic at “– written at a level which is easily accessible to the non-scientist but without being dumbed down. This is often a difficult balance to achieve, but I hope I manage it most of the time.” Physics and I are not (and never have been) friends. But I love space news. I feel that yer posts come closest to making me feel that I almost understand the concepts. At least in that moment anyway. So hooray for the new domain. Arrrr!
